Small but long- New deep hole drills from Floyd Automatic

For technically demanding, time consuming and costly drilling processes, Floyd Automatic Tooling is now introducing a new CrazyDrill Cool system from Mikron Tool SA. The innovative CrazyDrill Cool introduces new cutting geometries to perfectly meet the challenging conditions of deep hole drilling. The new small drill, from the proven CrazyDrill product range with cutting lengths of 15XD, 20XD and 30XD offers diameters from 1mm to 2mm diameter with an additional new length of 40XD.

The result of the new geometry is a ingeniously designed drill that produces short chips with all steel alloys. Working with hole depths of up to 40XD, short swarf chips are a pre-requisite for trouble free swarf evacuation. The drill is designed to reach the full depth in one single stroke without pecking, thus allowing very high speeds and feeds that improve productivity. With the aid of through tool internal cooling, the cutting conditions at the tip are ideal for a remarkable tool life.

A convincing feature that justifies the use of the extra long CrazyDrill Cool is its performance. The following practical examples show the potential of the new CrazyDrill Cool. A hole, Ø1.3mm with a depth 3.9mm (30XD), was drilled in 100Cr6 ball bearing steel in a single stroke with a cutting speed (vc) of 60m/min (n=14700 rpm/min) and a feed of 0.06mm/rpm (v1 = 881mm/min). Similarly, a second hole Ø4mm with a depth of 160mm (40XD), was machined in 14CrNi14 material. The new CrazyDrill drilled the hole in one stroke with a cutting speed of 100m/min (n=8000rpm/min) at a feed rate of 0.2mm/rpm (v1=1600mm/min).

The drilling examples highlight the ability of the new geometry to machine holes at high speeds and feeds with no pecking cycle. This new geometry improves the surface finish, speeds and
feeds as well as the tool life, which exceeds the tool life of competitor products. For further information, please contact Floyd Automatic Tooling.
