Schunk clamping rings without deformation
1 January 2011
For exact machining of thin-walled rings on rotary tables, cylindrical grinding machines and turning centers, SCHUNK has now enlarged its program for highly efficient workpiece clamping. The competence leader in clamping technology and gripping systems now offers a vast program of standardized magnetic chucks with a radial pole pitch. The MAGNOS radial pole plates are electriconically activated permanent magnets that are proven for hard and fine turning, as well as grinding and rough machining operations.
The electro-permanent magnetic clamping technology has been proven to drastically reduce set-up times. During turning operations, the workpiece can be machined from three sides without changeov-ers or additional set-ups. Since the magnetic fields of the radial pole plates are active up to the outer fringe areas, even extremely large workpieces can be clamped securely and deformation-free. This is a decisive advantage over face plates and jaw boxes. With its two-dimensional holding force, vibrations are significantly reduced during machining. This prevents the cutting edges of the tools from damage, improving tool life and it improves the surface finishes on the workpiece.
The MAGNOS radial pole plates are extremely flexible clamping de-vices. Without any additional set-up effort, they can alternately be used for machining workpieces of different sizes. By means of a multi level holding force regulation, the workpieces can be aligned. Following electrical activation, the permanent magnets assure safe hold even in case of power outage.
Depending on the individual application, three different sizes of standardised radial pole plates are available. For grinding op-erations, an AlNiCo single magnet system with automatic demagnetization is offered. For turning operations, SCHUNK intro-duces an AlNiCo double magnet system with high holding forces and a demagnetization cycle whilst the third plate is for demanding volume machining scenarios where an extra strong AlNiCo neo-dymium magnet system can be used for rough turning.
In total there are 17 diameters available for parts from 400 and 2000mm diameter as standard. As an option, individual models are available with a lateral connection or with a rotary distributor. For mounting the pole extensions, all the sizes are already equipped with a T-slot. SCHUNK manufactures larger diameters up to 4000mm from a single piece to meet customers’ specifications. This ensures great stability during the clamping operation.
